Key Mayan Temple Irreparably Damaged By Tourists

Tourists who flocked to Guatemala City for the ‘end-of-the-world’ parties have reportedly damaged an ancient Mayan stone temple.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tikal is one of the world’s most renowned archaeological sites of the Mayan civilization. Temple II is one of the prominent structures in Tikal. Many tourists have climbed the stairs of the prohibited stone Temple II that has lead to cause irreparable damage.

The Mayan temple was overflowing with more than 7000 tourists. A colourful ceremony with light fires was held by Mayan natives to mark an end of an era. The era was known to have lasted for 5,200 years according to the Mayan ‘Long Count’ calendar.
